Why Do Car Seats Expire?
Material fatigue – plastics and foams weaken with heat, sun, and use.
Safety standards – regulations change; expired seats may no longer meet legal requirements.
Manufacturer testing – companies only test their seats up to a certain age. Beyond that, safety can’t be guaranteed.
Wear and tear – harnesses, buckles, and covers degrade over time.
How do I find the expiry date of my car seat?
- Most car seats have a sticker or moulded stamp on the back or base showing the manufacture date and expiry period (e.g. “10 years from manufacture”). If in doubt, refer to the manual or the brand’s website for clarification.
Can I use an expired car seat?
- No. Expired seats are unsafe and cannot legally be used in New Zealand. They should be retired and replaced.
Do all brands have the same lifespan?
An expired Britax Boulevard with the harness and headrest foam removed, clearly labelled as EXPIRED with a large DO NOT USE warning. The manufacture date has been circled to indicate the seat is past its usable lifespan.
